Mercantour national park, walking tour in the South of France, 100 km north of Nice.
Our walk : from the gorges de Daluis to the Allos lake in 7 days walking!

Gorges de Daluis in the Mercantour national Park

Lac d'Allos: the core of the Mercantour national park

A 6km-long canyon formed by the River Var, its red glow is thanks to the sandstone, iron oxide and copper mix. It runs north to south from Guillaumes to the small town of Daluis, where houses cling onto the valley slopes. With canyoning and climbing opportunities, following waymarked ways by foot is the sumptuously slow way to revel in the gorge's magnificent rock formations, waterfalls and dramatic drops.

The largest natural glacier lake in Europe at this altitude (2,220m). In the shadow of Mont Pelat, there are a number of hikes possible to this stunning waterfront, such as the one from Allos village, about six hours there and back. The trails are busy during summer weekends, but if you stay at the lake's mountain refuge hut there, you'll have it all to yourselves at sunrise.

This walk is full of variety. Through the foot-hills and the fragrance of Provence and up to the alpine panoramas of the Mercantour National Park.

From the oak to the larch; from the wheat fields to the gentian lawns; from a man-made landscape to a sweeping scenery of wilderness. The last two days are a grandiose conclusion to the trip - with a good general idea of high mountain conditions and Europe's largest glacial lake. Marmots, chamois and golden eagles will be there to meet you!

Sauze to St Martin. Across the beautiful plateau "de la Lare" which offers a remarkable sight of the valley the path will alternate between long passages in the pine forest and some grassy meadows.   St Martin-Val Pelens: The postman trail: A short, peaceful connecting link to your next destination which will allow you to 'tantalise' the high mountain altitude at your own rhythm. You can then continue with the extra option or you could split into two groups, one staying at the auberge and the other climbing a beautiful, mineral summit.
Day 4   Day 5
Val Pelens-Entraunes: A remarkable trek towards the vast alpine landscapes of the mountain pass of Champs, meeting marmots along your way and what is more, an open panorama over the hautes vallées. You will be stunned by the power of the dense, vertical waterfalls awaiting you towards the end of your day.   By the waterfalls: Walking up through the village, you will follow a pretty path along the bed of the impressive Var river, between towering cliffs, and across the footbridges over the torrents of Garréton, Aiglière and the Var, with their impressive vertical falls!
Day 6   Day 7
Typically alpine, deep into the Mercantour park, this magnificent walk combines all the attractive elements of a high mountain environment: Panoramic mountain passes, barren ravines and mineral valleys, where chamois and marmots soak up the sun!   Your weeks trek rounds off in a climax with an enchanted tour around the glacial lakes of Allos, Garrets and la petite Cayolle. You will lose yourself on this journey through nature, where the blue sky is reflected in the clear waters of the lakes and the endemic flora strewn with alpine pastures: Alonie bluebell, wooly Berardie, Koch gentians, acaulescent catchflies, vanilla orchids, pansies ...
